BDŽ passenger cars

Overview of normal gauge passenger cars supplied to BDŽ from the 1960s to the present.

At the beginning of the 1960s, the European railway companies united in the organizations UIC and OSJD dealt with the standardization of passenger cars for international traffic. While the UIC defined uniform cars of the UIC-X and UIC-Y types, the OSJD organization, in which the railways of the Eastern Bloc were united, defined slightly different types OSJD-A and OSJD-B.

Production of OSJD-B cars began in the GDR at the beginning of the 1960s, and one of the first foreign customers was the Bulgarian State Railways BDŽ, which received two smaller series of cars of this type in 1962 and 1963. Although car production in the GDR soon shifted to the UIC-Y type, in Bulgaria the OSJD-B type was further developed at domestic Andrey Zhdanov wagon factory in Dryanovo. By the end of the 1970s, more than 1000 cars of this type were produced in various series for BDŽ, which thus became the basis of the BDŽ fleet, and BDŽ thus became the largest operator of cars of this type. In the 1980s, cars of the unique B-84 type, characterized by its sloping sidewalls, were produced in the Dryanovo wagon factory. They were developed especially for BDŽ and were not in use anywhere outside Bulgaria. UIC-Y and later UIC-Z2 type cars were delivered from wagon factories in the GDR only in relatively small numbers and were mainly intended for international trains.

In the late 1980s, the Bulgarian economy fell into a serious crisis, which was reflected in the economic possibilities of the BDŽ state railways. Since the 1990s, the renewal of BDŽ's vehicle fleet has been solved, with one small exception, exclusively by buying used cars from abroad. First, at the beginning of the 1990s, a small number of second-hand cars were bought from the French railways SNCF, followed by repeated purchases of several hundred second-hand cars from the German railways DB, mostly coming from the East German railways DR. Some of the purchased cars are of the same series that BDŽ already owned from deliveries in the 1970s and 1980s - these are listed together here in the overview. The modernisation programme for older cars, common on other railways from former Eastern Bloc, was implemented only to a limited extent at BDŽ. The only exception mentioned regarding the purchase of new cars after 1989 is the delivery of 30 new sleeper cars from the Turkish Tüvasaş wagon factory in 2012.

Andrey Zhdanov Dryanovo, OSJD-B
Between 1965 and 1979, numerous series of passenger cars for the BDŽ were produced in the domestic wagon "Andrey Zhdanov" in Dryanovo, in total more than 1000 cars were produced during this period. The cars correspond to the OSJD-B type. The first serie of this generation was the 20-17 open space cars, from which the 20-15 compartment cars were derived, and then other series followed. One common car body structure was used for all series, i.e. even the 1st class cars have 10 compartments. Over the years, there were various technical changes - the first cars had a different type of boogies (later changed on all cars), older cars have single-wing entrance doors, newer ones have standard folding UIC doors, different types of windows were used, etc. The production of OSJD-B cars was in Dryanovo ended with series 20-40 in 1979.

The last series of OSJD-B type cars produced in Dryanovo. The cars of this series were equipped with hot-air heating, unlike the previous 20-47/57. According to some sources, the continuation of production was prematurely terminated due to low production quality.

The individual cars differed from each other (different interior design, different type of bogies, windows and doors, different arrangement of windows and other details), which was due to the changing possibilities of the manufacturer at the time of production and also to later modification of the cars.
Due to the limited range of gastronomic services provided on board (only drinks and simple snacks), the cars were marked and operated as a buffet car, although the interior layout was more like a regular restaurant car (dining room with around 30 seats + kitchen). There were no standard seats in the car.

Waggonbau Bautzen/Görlitz, UIC-Y, Y/B-70
Between 1968 and 1982, passenger cars corresponding to the standard type UIC-Y, resp. Y/B-70 were delivered from the Bautzen factory, which were produced in practically the same design for other countries of the Eastern Bloc. A slight difference in cars from 1982 is the lower design of the roof (similar to cars for MÁV at that time). In addition to the seating cars, sleeping cars produced in the Görlitz factory were also delivered.
In the 1990s, BDŽ bought other cars of this type from DB, which acquired them from DR after the reunification of Germany.

Cars from DB/DR
In the 1990s and 2000s, the renewal of the vehicle fleet was solved by purchasing used cars from Germany. A total of around 400 cars of various types were bought, originating mainly from DR. Some cars were of the same type as already owned cars supplied in the 1970s and 1980s directly from the factory (UIC-Y and some UIC-Z) - these are described above in the relevant sections for clarity; in this section, only those series of cars that have not yet had their equivalent at BDŽ are listed.

In 2008, a contract was concluded with the company Arvex for the delivery and reconstruction of 30 sleeper cars ex DB. In 2009, 12 cars were delivered, which only received a new paint job and minor interior repairs. Another 18 cars were never delivered, although most of the cars had already been paid for. Of the 12 cars delivered, 6 cars were soon scrapped due to various defects, the remaining 6 cars were in service only between 2009 and 2012. The entire order was probably constructed as a fraud from the beginning and became the subject of a long-term investigation.
Among the undelivered cars, in addition to other ex DB cars, there was also at least one T2 ex SNCB car, which had already received a new BDŽ livery, but it was never in operation at BDŽ.
